RASCOM: 33 years at the global telecom market

On June 8, 2026 JSC RASCOM is celebrating 33 aniversary of its founding. Through all these years the company has come a long way from one of the first digital telecom carriers in Russia to a significant marker player that is providing connectivity between Russia and the major international internet exchange centers.

The history of RASCOM started in 1993. The company’s specialists implemented of of the first fiber-optic lines projects in the country. Firstly the network consisted of two STM1 systems on the route Moscow – Saint Petersburd with total capacity of 310 Mbps. That was the time when the company laid down the following as a core principle: infrastructure development with a reserve of reliability as well as potential for the further improvement.

The next important step was expanding the network beyond Russia. In 1996 RASCOM built a backbone from Saint Petersburg to the stae boarder with finland, hence it enterd the international communication market. Starting from the year 2007 RASCOM commenced building and mainetance of its own network in Europe. For the last 33 years RASCOM’s network grew to dozens of network nodes and cover more that 100 poits of presence. The company became a reliable partner for the major communication carriers, internet providers and mediaholdings.

Today the russian telecommunication industry is facing severe challenges. Changes in the international internet exchange, sanction restrictions, demand of technological self-sufficiency, growth of transmitted data and constantly increasing level of cyber threats require high sustainability and fexibility from the carriers. Under current circumstances RASCOM keeps developing by increasing the stability of its network as well as keeping the focus on providing its customers with the services of the highest level.

The company’s specialists are working on expanding the range services and implementing new solutions. DDoS mitigation has become one of the most demanded direction, and the demand keeps growing against the backdrop of the increasing amount and complexity of cyber incidents. Today RASCOM provides its customers with up-to-date tools that ensure the cyber security.

There is particular emphasis of the company on development of its key asset, t.e. international backbone communication network. The latest years were dedicated to diversify the routes and to improve the infrastructure fault tolerance. In 2025 the amount of independent DWDM systems between Russia and Europe increased up to 5. This work continues and by 2027 RASCOM is expecting to provide russian carriers with another DWDM backbone Moscow-Frankfurt which will allow ensuring lowest RTD, iproving reliability of the services and almost getting rid of infrastructure risks for the customers.

33 years is an important milestone in the history of company. However it is not just a reason for recap but also an opportunity to set the new goals.
