Company’s own DWDM system construction completed at the route Stockholm – Frankfurt

24.01.2011
The company RASCOM has finalized building work on its own DWDM system at the section Stockholm – Frankfurt. The capacity of the newly built more than 1.8 thousand kilometers long backbone line equals to 3.5 Tbps. The system comprises 24 nodes that include regen and access sites. The investments made for the design totaled about US$8 million.
The construction has been performed by RASCOM’s own installation teams and included the entire design and financial documentation preparation stage, up-grading the nodes in Stockholm  and Frankfurt, as well as commissioning and adjustment works.
It was not per accident that the Stockholm – Frankfurt route was chosen. Mr K.F. Astapkovich, RASCOM’s Technical Director, comments the advantages of building the company’s own route: “The issues of network end-to-end monitoring and instantaneous response to the customers’ demands are of vital importance for us, so we are constantly striving to improve the network control degree, and putting our own network segments instead of those leased from other providers is one of key elements of this control.”
It is worthwhile to stress the economical efficiency of the project implemented that permitted to optimize the leased resources at the section  Stockholm – Frankfurt featuring a total capacity of more than 300 Gbps.
Mr V.I. Kireev,  General Director of the Closed Joint-Stock Company ‘Rascom’, comments: ”The idea of creating a backbone network to connect Russia and Europe has arisen as far back as 1999. Since then, we were, in a planned way, developing this project basing upon the demands of our customers. Even at that time, as we have had both leased network segments and our own sections of the route, we were able to evaluate the advantages of monitoring a network from a single center.
Nowadays, RASCOM’s network has developed to become a leading international capacity operator, whose customers include not only the companies CJSC “Vympelkom” and CJSC “Company Transtelekom” that are closely related to us. The capacity sizes that are being used by other customers of RASCOM total to 80% of the whole capacity that is implemented by our company”.
“It will not be the first year of our co-operation with the company RASCOM’, comments Mr Stanislav Miron, CJSC “Sinterra” General Director Deputy for network development. – “Even though “Sinterra” has been connected to the DE-CIX traffic exchange point since 2009, I am sure that RASCOM’s DWDM system will permit us, as one of leading national carriers in Russian Federation, to develop co-operation with major Internet-providers and strengthen “Sintrerra”’s status as an efficient partners offering services of passing IP-traffic for Russian operators.”
Mr Sergey Yakovlev, Vice-President, TTK Sales Department Chief, has commented completing this project by RASCOM: ”The company TTK possesses one of the most powerful backbone networks. End 2010, we have started to use RASCOM’s circuits to enhance the connectivity of our networks with the European segment of the Internet. The choice was not accidental. RASCOM is an innovation company that knows how to use advanced technologies on their network and is developing it on the directions that are interesting for us. We have appreciated the service quality and the time span for service arrangement with this company as they are featuring high level work and we wish the company to attain further successes in developing their business.”
For nearest years, RASCOM’s plans include building of companies own DWDM systems on highly-demanded Europeans directions from Stockholm to Amsterdam and London, with a capacity of more than 3.5 Tbps.
